Sarasota Fire Receives $20,000 grant

Sarasota, Florida -- The Sarasota County Fire Department is receiving $20,000 to purchase smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher training system that will be used to teach local residents how to safely and effectively use fire extinguishers.  

In addition to enabling firefighters to provide hands-on fire extinguisher training to the public, the funds will also purchase dual-technology smoke detectors. These detectors offer the highest rate of reliability and will be distributed to community members lacking the financial means to purchase this critical life-saving device.

Scientists want reports of whale shark sightings

VENICE, Florida (AP) - Scientists at Mote Marine Laboratory are asking the public to keep their eyes peeled for the world's largest fish.

A whale shark was spotted May 8 about 20 miles off the coast of Venice.

The fish can be up to 42 feet long and nearly 24 tons.

Driver uses shotgun to blast out car window in road rage incident

SARASOTA CO., Florida -- A window with a hole blasted through it, blood on the seat, and a floor full of bird shot is what police found after a nasty and terrifying road rage incident.

Cops say it all started as two vehicles were traveling southbound on US 41. As the cars passed the La Casa Mobile Home Park, the suspect aimed a shotgun at the other vehicle and fired, blowing a hole in the window.

Glass and birdshot peppered the two passengers inside. The victims followed the suspect, but gave up the chase after a few miles.

18-year-old arrested for sharing child porn

Englewood, Florida -- An 18-year-old Englewood teen faces numerous child porn charges after detectives found out he was sharing pornographic images to others.

Detectives say they learned a computer user in Sarasota County was downloading and sharing child pornography on the Internet using peer-to-peer software from a specific IP address. 

After viewing an extensive list of files available from that address, detectives determined many of the titles suggested content including sexual abuse of sexual exploitation of children.

Enhanced traffic patrols designed to keep roadways safe

Sarasota County, Florida -- The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office will use enhanced traffic enforcement over the next few weekends to keep streets safe and take impaired drivers off the road.

Deputies will use “saturation patrols” this weekend and over the Memorial Day holiday weekend to look for traffic offenses, motorists driving without a license, those with warrants and drunk drivers.

North Port, Florida --The City of North Port and the Sarasota County Extension Service Master Gardener Program have partnered together to offer free gardening classes. 

Bring your brown bag lunch and learn about Florida gardening from a Urban Horticulture Extension Agent and Master Gardener Coordinator, or Master Gardeners. 

The class will be located at the Garden of the Five Senses, 4299 Pan American Boulevard on Thursday, May 23  from Noon - 1:00 p.m.

The class will focus on Container Gardening.
